compounds,
while retaining all the tradition whole-part characteristics from other
complementary herbs.
Rice Bran
contains an isolated active substance called gamma-oryzanol (esters of
ferulic acid). Several studies indicate gamma-oryzanol is quite
effective in lowering blood cholesterols and triglyceride levels. In one
study, gamma-oryzanol was given to 67 subjects with elevated cholesterol
and / or triglyceride levels. After 4 weeks, cholesterol levels declined
by 8 to 12 percent, and the mean triglyceride level dropped from an
average of 222 milligrams per deciliter to 190 milligrams per deciliter.
Mild elevations in HDL were also reported. Gamma-oryzanols
cholesterol-lowering action appears to involve a combination of effects.
It increases the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids, increase bile
acid excretion, and inhibits the absorption of cholesterol.
Phytosterols
are abundant in all plants, including fruits and vegetables.
Phytosterols contains beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and
brassicasterol. Researchers have known for 50 years that phytosterols
can reduce blood cholesterol levels, and this characteristic is likely
part of the reason why a diet rich n fruits and vegetables reduces the
risk of heart disease. Phytosterols block cholesterols absorption from
foods and decrease the bodys resorption of cholesterol made in the
liver. In one study appearing in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, people taking Phytosterols had a average 14.6% decrease in
LDL cholesterol as well as a 9% decrease in triglycerides.
Garlic
contains sulfur-based
compounds known as allyl sulfides and other phytochemicals that studies
show may lower serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, improve the
ratio of beneficial and healthful high-density lipoproteins HDL
cholesterol (beneficial) to LDL (harmful) cholesterol. Garlic appears to
directly inhibit production of cholesterol by the liver and to enhance
the excretion of cholesterol.
Green Tea
is loaded with
polyphenols, a class of phytochemicals with 100 times the antioxidant
punch of vitamin C that inhibits free radical reaction. In a population
study of 1,371 Japanese men, researchers found that Green Tea improves
the ratio of LDL (low-density lipoprotein, or bad cholesterol) to HDL
(high-density lipoprotein, or good cholesterol) which is associated with
increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the study is also
shown a decreased concentration of certain chemicals related to liver
cell damage.
According to clinical and
laboratory studies, Artichoke lowers elevated cholesterol,
a major risk factor for heart disease. Other studies have shown that
artichoke can prevent the oxidation of harmful low-density lipoprotein
(LDL) cholesterol, which has also been implicated in the development of
atheroschelrosis (hardening of the arteries). Laboratory research shows
that artichoke directly inhibits the production of cholesterol by the
liver.
Guggul
is an herb
from India where numerous studies have shown that Guggul helps reduce
and maintain cholesterol levels. Guggul also increase the level of HDL
good cholesterol and protects the heart against atherosclerosis. A
number of human trials have demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of
guggul that can improve and maintain the ration of HDL cholesterol to
LDL. *
